Settawya Pagoda, also called Sat Taw Yar Pagoda, was built somewhere between 1804 and 1811. It is a medium sized lovely white temple which goes from the main street all the way back down to the Irrawaddy River.

If you look inside the main temple chamber you will find the the marble carved footprint of Buddha set on a raised dias in the floor. Outside, from the rear terrace, you can go down the steps to the river.

The steps leading down to the river have four rows of carved figures ending at two large leogryph lions at the river edge. I am not yet sure of the signifence but if you look at the two rows of statues on the left and compare them to the two rows on the right you will see that thay have different hands raised to their chest. The center row make for a wider staiway with a smaller stairway between the outer rows. Possibly as is found elsewhere in Asia the monks and royals use the center stairs and men and women separate and use the outer stairs.

If the tide is in you can imagine how the royal barge could have easily moored at the bottom of the stairway and the royal party could have disembarked and just walked up the steps to the temple.

From Sat Taw Yar Pagoda walk about 100m further up the street and on your right are the Giant Lions.
